The Marriage Plot

“In Madeleine’s face was a stupidity Mitchell had never seen before. It was the stupidity of all normal people. It was the stupidity of the fortunate and beautiful, of everybody who got what they wanted in life and so remained unremarkable.”

  1. You’ve just donvinced me to buy that book, it was either the fact that I share Madeleine’s name, that I saw the book on amazon today, or that you are just simply the most brilliant bookworm on the planet.

  2. Wow. I don’t know how he did it, but he just described the state of so many “normal people” more candidly and artfully than I’ve heard anybody describe it. Awesome!

  3. Compelling! I have a mixed bag of luck with Eugenides, but I’ll definitely be reading this one because it’s on the Tournament of Books list and that whole event is like crack to me. Glad to have found your blog!

  4. Haven’t read that book, but a strong quote indeed! Loved it! 🙂

Btw, just ran across your blog and I think it’s cool. I’m a fellow book lover and wish I could read more than I do…

  5. I love this quote… I first experienced The Marriage Plot via audiotape driving from LA to Berkeley, which makes for a fast but not always thorough read. After seeing this post, I want to reread it! It seems like there may be more hidden gems there.
